| 1. Find the picture file you want to work with and note what directory it is saved in. (In the example below the picture file is saved in the "My Documents" directory. If you can't find the picture file you are looking for you may want to save it to your computer again and be sure to note the directory that you are saving it to so you can find it. |
| |
| 2. Open the Microsoft Paint program. If you're not sure where Paint is located the picture below shows where to find it. |
| |
| 3. Once you have opened Paint you should have a screen that looks like the one below... |
| |
| 4. Now you want to open the picture file that you want to resize in the Paint program. To begin this process click "File" and choose the option "Open..." from the drop down menu as illustrated below. |
| |
| 5. You should now have a pop-up window that looks like the one shown below. (if not repeat step 4) At the top of the pop-up window select the directory that the picture file is saved in (as noted in step 1) from the "Look in:" drop down menu. At the bottom of the pop-up window, select the option All Files from the Files of type drop down menu. |
| |
| 6. Your picture file should now be visible in the pop-up window. (if not you either; 1. are not in the right directory, or 2. did not select the "All Files" option in step 5.) Now simply open the picture file in Paint by double clicking it in the pop-up window. |
| |
| 7. After double clicking the desired image file in step the picture will open in the "work area" of the Paint program as shown below. |
| |
| 8. Now it's time to shrink the image. To do so select the "Image" option in the Menu Bar and select the "Stretch/Skew" option from the drop down menu as shown below. |
| |
| 9. You should now have a pop-up menu that looks like the one below...(if not repeat step 8)... |
| |
| 10. We are only concerned with the "Stretch" portion of the pop-up window. Choose what percentage of the original picture size you want the new picture size to be and enter that value in the "Horizontal" and "Vertical" fields. *Important - you must always choose identical horizontal and vertical percentages to avoid image distortion! Once you have entered percentages click the "OK" button. |
| |
| 11. Your picture should now be resized to the percentage you specified as shown below. |
| |
| 12. Now it's time to save the new picture. To do so click the "File" option in the Menu Bar and select the "Save As..." option from the drop down menu. |
| |
| 13. In the "Save As" pop-up window select the file type you want to save the new image as from the "Save as type" drop down menu. (For smaller file sizes it is best to select the JPEG option as shown below!) Then select the directory that you want to save your new image to from the "Save in:" drop down menu and click the "Save button. |
| |
14. Your picture should now be saved and you can find it in the directory you specified in step 13.
*You can always undo any action in Paint by holding down the "Ctrl" key and the "Z" key simultaneously on your keyboard.
*To view the actual image size (in pixels) of the image you are working on in Paint, hold down the "Ctrl" key and the "E" key simultaneously on your keyboard. This is useful if you know roughly what pixel size you want the resized image to be. |
